Ava DuVernay, the American screenwriter and director, has released « Origin », a brand new film that tackles American racism based on Isabel Wilkerson’s book « Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents ».
Wilkerson’s book, published shortly before the death of George Floyd, reframes American racism through the historical stratifications of caste, connecting these structures to Nazi Germany and the caste system in India. After initially putting off reading the book, Ava DuVernay found it to be a « true revelation » that allowed her to « try to understand how this idea of a human hierarchy, where certain people are deemed superior to others based on a set of arbitrary traits, » fit into her life as a woman.
From this reading, « Origin » was born, a film that follows the character portrayed by actress Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as she delves into the famous book and navigates her own personal joys and tragedies.
Despite its poignant story, it is evident that « the film did not have the same impact within the Hollywood community in terms of industry recognition, and this is a mechanism that can be attributed to the limited budget and strategy of our distributors, as well as how the film was distributed, » laments the director.
Nevertheless, Ava DuVernay rejoices that « those who were able to see it through the efforts of directors, actors, and all who advocated for its sharing had an extremely positive reaction. »
